ASSIGNMENT 1 - MY CAMPUS

EXPLORING SPACES AND MATERIALS

In this group assignment, we were asked to find a space within the campus area and further examine the building materials that fill the space as an introduction assignment to us to know and understand the common building materials selected and its usage. In a group of 5, Albert, Mok Po Yi, Ng Seng He and Hor Weng Lim and I. We decided to choose Computer Lab 11 which is located at Block C Level 7 as our site. This room features a glass wall that gives a view of the lake.

We were needed to put all our findings in A3 presentation boards and then presented them in class. The buildings materials that we found were concrete, metal, asbestos, glass, cement, aluminium and ceramic. We took pictures of them by closer zoom in and loaded them in our presentations boards and it came out really impressive. The best part was that we actually D.I.Y all the building materials that we could found in Computer Lab 11. It was fun in making all of these because it required teamwork spirit and creative thinking skills. Moreover, we also explained the advantages and disadvantages for each of the building materials, the suitability of materials to the surface used and our own opinion on the materials used in our presentation boards.

In conclusion, this assignment introduce us to the building materials which we are exposed to in our daily life and give us the exposure to the environment and surrounding that we are engaged in. This assignment has also taught us to recognize types and properties of building materials, describe the general use of different building materials in selected space and most importantly it allow us to understand the choices that designers make in choosing the building materials based on its properties and its suitability.
