Structures [ BLD 61203 ]

Lecturer : Ir. Chai Voon Chiet

This is a 3 credit hour module conducted over a period of 14 weeks. The modes of delivery will be in the form of lectures, tutorials and self-directed study. This module introduces students to structural elements, such as beams, slabs and columns, and the functions of it. Reinforced concrete types of structural elements will be the main subject discussion throughout the syllabus. Students are also made familiar with loading system and structural analysis particularly in trusses and simple beam.

This module also provides student a continuation study of the development and understanding of basic concept of structures taken in construction technology. It helps student to understand structural systems including foundations that essential and integral components of all buildings. Furthermore, to establish a clear understanding of the physical behavior of structural elements and complete systems. In addition, to identify the structural principles and the knowledge gained is appropriately applied to ensure that there is a total integration of structural function and action with the overall design objectives.

From the lectures that had been conducted by Mr. Chai, we were able to explain the action of structural elements and complete systems as well as recognize the perception of structure as an integral element of architecture. Most importantly, we were able to interpret the application of the total integration of structural functions and actions with the overall design objectives.
